Training and Development: CPD Website
We believe that our job does not stop when we find you yours. We want you to become the best social worker that you can possibly be. We will help you make the most of your existing skills and show you ways of improving and honing new ones.
Reed Social Care has been key in developing the “Standards for Employment Agencies in Regulated Care and Health Services” (SEARCH) the recommended standards for recruitment in the social care and health services sector, working in partnership with Skills for Care (formerly known as Training Organisation for the Personal Social Services, TOPSS).
In light of Skills for Care and the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements for qualified candidates for re-registration for the General Social Care Council, Reed Social Care are working in partnership with social care training providers throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland, to develop a comprehensive, cost-effective solution to facilitate an individual’s mandatory training and CPD.
This unique service, offered by Reed Social Care, will enable all Social Care professionals to search, identify and select courses that they are interested in attending.
The events are organised by a number of established and respected providers across the professions. Many of the courses are offered at a specially discounted rate exclusive to Reed Social Care.
Our courses are available to everyone at all professional levels. Managers and head of departments can also use this resource to send members of staff on identified courses and can even host some of the courses locally.
By ‘registering’ an interest, you will be put directly in contact with the provider organising the course. This centralised resource and database takes the headache out of searching for high quality courses of interest to you.
The Open University
As part of our comprehensive CPD package, Reed Social Care has developed a close relationship with The Open University's School of Health and Social Welfare, the UK's largest provider of education and training for health and social care. The Open University's unique method of study is ideally suited, we believe, to our philosophy and the needs of our candidates.
The OU programmes allow you to study in your own time, with the support of top quality teaching materials, a personal tutor, regular assessments and feedback to aid your progress. The courses can be tailored to accommodate your own particular circumstances and there are very few restrictions on the time it takes to complete a qualification. Most courses can be studied individually, perhaps for professional updating in a specific area, or they can be studied in combination, enabling you to create a diploma or degree profile according to your needs and interests.
Employees of Reed HealthCare are eligible for a special discount of 10%* on Open University Health and Social Welfare courses.

GSCC Guidelines on CPD
Post-registration training and learning is a key condition for continued registration. GSCC registration rules specify the post-registration training and learning requirements that all registered social workers must meet. The rules state that:
- every social worker registered with the GSCC shall, within the period of registration, complete either 90 hours or 15 days of study, training, courses, seminars, reading, teaching or other activities which could reasonably be expected to advance the social worker's professional development, or contribute to the development of the profession as a whole
- every social worker registered with the GSCC shall keep a record of post-registration training and learning undertaken; failure to meet these conditions may be considered misconduct.
There are many ways to continue to learn and develop as a social worker so the GSCC have deliberately avoided being too specific about the type of activities which will meet their requirements.
The training and learning activities undertaken should:
- benefit your current employment
- benefit your career progression
- reflect your preferred learning style
- make the most of the learning opportunities available to you to form part of your wider professional development.
If you are studying for a certificated post-qualifying award, you can use those studies as evidence that you meet the post-registration training and learning requirements.
The requirement is for 90 hours, which is about 15 full days. The time doesn't have to be made up of 15 full days - you can make up the 90 hours with as many short periods of training or learning as you like. Treat the requirement of 90 hours or 15 days as the minimum.
As long as you do the training or learning within your three-year registration period, it doesn't matter when you do it. You could complete all 15 days of training and learning in one of the years of the registration period but it is equally acceptable for you to complete five days training and learning a year. Keep a record of your post-registration training and learning, when you apply to renew your registration the GSCC may ask you to provide evidence of your training and learning.
It is a good idea to start keeping a record of your training and learning now. The GSCC have included a suggested format which can be downloaded.
The GSCC expect that the post-registration training and learning activities you undertake will be consistent with your work role and the aims and objectives of your employer. It is important that you and your employer or manager discuss and plan how you will meet your training and learning requirements. This will enable you to build on your knowledge and experience and enhance your expertise in your current areas of practice, which will also support your employers' objectives.
